Abstract (2. Language):
Objective: The aim was to determine the risk factors of suicidal drug poisonings among students to help develop education and prevention programs for the public and medical professionals. Methods: The data of the suicidal drug poisonings among students who were admitted to the Emergency Department of the Medical Faculty of Mersin University during a two year period was retrospectively analyzed. Results: The total number of cases was 35, 62.9% of them were in the 10-20 year age group. The median age was 18.8 ± 3.93. Of the patients, 68.6% were female, the female to male ratio (F/M) was 2.18. Of the cases, 54.3 % were university students, whereas the remaining were high school (34.3%) and junior high school (11.4%) students. Of the cases, 80% were drug poison¬ings and 20% were alcohol and drug poisonings. Among the drug poisonings, psychotropics and analgesics were the most fre¬quent agents. 40% of the cases had a history of psychiatric dis¬orders. Most of the patients with a history of psychiatric disorder had been suffering from depression and obsessive-compulsive dis¬order. Conclusion: We observed that young females constitued the majority of suicidal poisonings among students, that depression was an important risk factor and that psychotropics and anal¬gesics were the most frequent agents as a result of their easy availability.
