Variation of Total Coliform and Heterotrophic Bacteria Numbers in Open and Covered Sludge Drying Beds

Abstract (2. Language):
In this study, wastewater sludges were dried in open and covered sludge drying beds and the variations of total coliform and heterotrophic bacteria numbers in sludges were monitored during three different drying periods. Compared to similar solar drying systems, the covered sludge drying bed employed in this study presented diversity with respect to flat plate solar collectors which heated the impermeable concrete floor and the axial fans which recycled warm indoor air back to the rock bed. The results of the study indicated that drying and microbial removal efficiency in open sludge drying beds directly depend on climatic conditions. After the heavy rainfall events microbial regrowth was observed in open sludge drying beds and increased moisture level introduced an increment of 1-1,5 log bacteria. On the other hand, the sludge from covered drying bed produced more consistent results with respect to dry solids and bacterial content. The dry solid contents in sludges from the covered system were all above the value of 85% in all drying periods. The removal of total coliform and heterotrophic bacteria were 2,27 to 3,68 log and 1,45 to 2,80 log, respectively.
