Abstract (2. Language): 
It was aimed to investigate the political structure of Mersin and its place in the general political structure of Turkey by using methods and techniques of political sociology. Structuralfunctionalist was used as the theoretical base. To achieve this goal, the results of the Turkish local elections in last 50 years (were examined. First of all, the formation of political power in Turkey and the overall operation and changing regularities at the bases of the local elections were evaluated. Secondly, It was looked to the formation of the political structure and the distribution of political power in Mersin since 1963 up to 2012. Finally, the meaning of Mersin findings within Turkish society was elaborated. Findings show that the political structure of Mersin city is rather different than overall Turkey. Rightist politics predominates the political structure of Mersin province. However, left politics plays a determining role in the political structure of the city of Mersin. Nevertheless, it has been experiencing significant changes in the city of Mersin in recent years: While left-wing parties have been experiencing a significant decrease, the trend has been upward for the right-wing parties.

Bu çalışmada, siyaset sosyolojisinin yöntem ve teknikleri kullanılarak, yapısal-işlevselci bir bakış açısından hareketle, Mersin’in siyasi yapısı ve Türkiye’nin genel siyasi yapısı içindeki yerinin incelenmesi hedeflenmiştir. Bir başka anlatımla Mersin’de siyasi erkin oluşumu, şekillenişi, işleyiş ve değişim düzenliliklerinin araştırılması ve topyekün Türk toplumu içindeki yerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amacı gerçekleştirmek için son 50 yılın yerel seçim (toplam 10 yerel seçim) sonuçları incelendi: Önce yerel seçim sonuçları temelinde Türkiye’de siyasal gücün şekillenişi, dağılımı ve değişim düzenlilikleri incelendi. İkinci aşamada ise Mersin ili özelinde siyasi yapının oluşumu, siyasi gücün dağılımı ve 1960’lı yıllardan günümüze değişim düzenliliklerine bakıldı. Üçüncü olarak da, Mersin ile ilgili olarak ortaya konan bulguların Türk toplumu geneli içinde ne anlam ifade ettiği konusu irdelendi. Bulgular Mersin kentinin siyasi yapısının, Mersin ili ve Türkiye genelinden farklı bir görünüm sergilediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Yerel seçimlerde Mersin ilinin siyasi yapısında sağ siyaset anlayışı ağır basmaktadır. Buna karşın Mersin kentinin siyasi yapısında ise sol siyaset geleneği belirleyici rol oynar. Fakat son dönemlerde Mersin kentinde önemli değişimlere tanık olunmuştur. Türkiye genelinde olduğu gibi Mersin kentinde de sol partiler önemli bir gerileme süreci yaşarken, sağ partiler yükseliş trendine girmiştir. Ayrıca Mersin’in siyasi yapısında, etnik temelli siyaset yapan siyasi partilerin de önemli mevziler kazanmaya başladığı dikkat çekmektedir.
