Abstract (2. Language):
Professor Barlas Tolan was one the pioneering sociologists who problematized
the urbanization phenomenon in Turkey, on a critical and analytical axis. According to
Tolan, the process of urbanization is phase of modernization, and not only a problematic
of space. The gradual dissociation of the rural relations and structures evoked the
replacement of these by modernones, but it also engendered a series of contradictions due
to the speed of the change. This is quite different model of urbanization comparing to that
of the western model. By starting from thiscrucial point, Tolan thought about the position
of the man in the process of modernization that gave birth to his studies in social
psychology. By the same token, Tolan analyzed the phenomena of anomie and alienation,
and henceforth wrote the nearly unique reference book on that subject in Turkey. This
article aims to present the general sociological approach, methodology and domains of
research of Tolan.

Türkiye’de toplumbilimin yaygınlaşması ve kurumsallaşmasına önemli katkıları olan Prof. Dr. Barlas Tolan, kentleşme olgusu üzerine ilk eleştirel ve çözümlemeci yaklaşımı geliştiren bilim insanlarından birisi olmuştur. Kentleşme olgusu, Tolan’da yalnızca bir mekân sorunsalı değil bir modernleşme aşamasıdır. Kırın çözülerek yerini yeni ilişki ve yapı biçimlerine terke etmeye başlaması, beraberinde, toplumsal değişmenin hızına bağlı bir dizi çelişkiyi de getirmiştir. Bu, batı modeli kentleşmeden farklıdır. Tolan bu temel sorunsalından yola çıkarak insanın modernleşme süreci içindeki konumunu incelemeye yönelmiş, sosyal psikoloji araştırmaları bu bağlamda doğmuştur. Aynı şekilde anomi ve yabancılaşma olguları üzerine de düşünmüş, bu konuda Türkiye’de neredeyse tek referans olan kitabını yazmıştır. Bu makale, Tolan’ın genel toplumbilimsel yaklaşımını, yöntemini ve araştırma alanlarını tanıtmayı amaçlar.
