The Relationship of University Students’ Love Styles with Demographic Variables and Parental Attachment

Love, which is an important element in human life, is a relatively new research phenomenon. Besides been affected by cultural/contextual conditions, love is seen as a universal phenomenon and handled differently by various theories. However, what is known regarding the issue is yet limited. In particular, the number of studies done particularly in Turkey is so few. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the love styles of emerging adult individuals in terms of demographic variables and parental attachment. 285 university students enrolled in the research with a relational screening model. The participants were applied Individual Information Form, Attitudes towards Love Scale (Hendrick, Hendrick and Dicke, 1998) and Parent Form of The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (Armsden and Greenberg, 1987). As a result of the analyses, it has been found out that the number of affairs differs according to gender. Significant relationships have been found between the number of affairs and ludic and agapic love, and also between the affair duration and erotic, storgic, agapic and ludic love. Also, we have concluded that, ludic love, pragmatic love, manic love and agapic love differ according to gender. It has been found out that there are significant relationships between maternal attachment score and erotic, storgic and ludic love score; and also between the attachment on the father score and erotic, storgic and agapic love score. As a result, one can say that the obtained results both support the theories and signify the importance of cultural/contextual conditions on love affairs.

İnsan yaşamında önemli bir unsur olan aşk, görece yeni bir araştırma konusudur. Aşkın, kültürel/bağlamsal koşullardan etkilenmesinin yanı sıra evrensel bir olgu olduğu kabul edilmekte ve çeşitli kuramlarda farklı biçimlerde ele alınmaktadır. Ancak konu ile ilgili bilinenler hala sınırlıdır. Özellikle Türkiye’de yapılan çalışmaların sayısı çok azdır. Bu araştırmada beliren yetişkinlik dönemindeki bireylerin aşk stillerinin demografik değişkenler ve ana babaya bağlanma düzeyleri açısından incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. İlişkisel tarama modelindeki araştırmaya 285 üniversite öğrencisi katılmıştır. Katılımcılara Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Aşka İlişkin Tutumlar Ölçeği (Hendrick, Hendrick ve Dicke, 1998) ve Anne-Baba ve Akrana Bağlanma Ölçeğinin (Armsden ve Greenberg, 1987) anne ve baba formu uygulanmıştır. Analizler sonucunda ilişki sayısının cinsiyete göre farklılaştığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. İlişki sayısı ile oyun gibi aşk ve sahiplenici aşk, ilişki süresi ile tutkulu aşk, arkadaşça aşk, özgeci aşk ve oyun gibi aşk puanları arasında anlamlı ilişkiler olduğu bulunmuştur. Oyun gibi aşk, mantıklı aşk, sahiplenici aşk ve özgeci aşk puanlarının cinsiyete göre farklılaştığı tespit edilmiştir. Anneye bağlanma puanları ile tutkulu aşk, arkadaşça aşk ve oyun gibi aşk puanları arasında ve ayrıca babaya bağlanma puanları ile tutkulu aşk, arkadaşça aşk ve sahiplenici aşk puanları arasında anlamlı ilişkiler olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Sonuç olarak elde edilen bulguların hem çeşitli kuramları desteklediği hem de kültürel/bağlamsal koşulların ilişkilerdeki etkisine işaret ettiği söylenebilir.
