RADIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF STYLOID PROCESS IN THE ELDERLY

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of elongated styloid process (SP) and morphological calcification patterns of stylohyoid complexes on panoramic radiographs of people 55 years old and over and anayyze its association to age and gender. Material and Method: The materials of this study were the panoramic radiographs of 189 patients; 90 males (mean age: 62.04±8.01) and 99 females (mean age: 61.58±7.10), aged 55 years and over that retrieved from archive files. For radiological evaluation of the morphology of the calcified stylohyoid complexes was allocated by MacDonald-Jankowski classification and the lengths of the styloid process were measured directly on the radiographs based on the descriptions of Jung et al. Statistical anatysis included Student t-test and chi-square tests. Results: In this study the prevalence of elongated styloid process was %27. The length of SP was found to be 28.60±12.69 mm. There were no significant statistical differences between the lengths of the SP either on the left of right side and gender (p>0.05). Age also was not found to be statisticalty significant for elongated styloid process (p>0.05). Type D and E were found to be more frequent regardnng the morphology of the calcified stylohyoid complexes. There were no significant differences in age and gender for the morphology of the calcified stylohyoid complexes (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of our study suggested that elongated SP or calcification of stylohyoid complexes could be observed on panoramic radiographs of 55 years and over, regardless from gender. Regardnng the morphological calcffication patterns, Type D was observed most frequently in the population studied.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı 55 yaş ve üstü brreylerde stiloid proçesin (SP) uzunluğunu ve morfo-lojlk kalsifkasyon tiplerinin görülme sıklığını beiirleye-rek, yaş ve cnnsiyetle o/an ilişkisini incelemektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmanın materyaiini 55 yaş ve üstü, 90 erkek (yaş ortalaması; 62.04±8.01) ve 99 kadın (yaş ortalaması; 61.58±7.10) hasta olmak üzere toplam 189 hastaya ait arşiv panoramik radyografiler oluşturmaktadır. Radyografik değerlendirmeler; SP uzunluk ölçümleri Jung ve arkadaş/arının sınıflaması kullanılarak, morfolojik kalsifkasyon tiplerinin değerlendirilmesi ise MacDonald-Jankowski sınıflamasına göre yapılmıştır. İstatistiksel analiz için Student t-test ve ki kare testi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: İnce/enen 189 panoramik radyografide SP uzunluğu 28.60±12.69 mm oaarak ve uzamış stiloid proçes görülme sıklığı %27 o/arak tespit edilmiştir. Sağ taraf SP ve sol taraf SP uzunlukaarı ve cnnsiyet arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki bulunmadığı (p>0.05) gibi, yaş ve SP uzunluğu arasında da istatistiksel o/arak anlamı ilişki bulunmamıştır (p>0.05). SP morfolojik yapı tiplerinden Tip D ve Tip E daha fazla olarak görülürken, SP/erde izlenen morfolojik kalsifkasyon tipleri ile yaş ve cinsiyet arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farkhhkaar bulunmamıştır (p>0.05). Sonuç: Bizim ça/ışmamızın sonuçları, 55 yaş ve üzeri bireylerin panoramik radyograflernnde uzamış SP ya da stilohyoid kompleksin kalsifkasyonu izlenebilen, cnnsiyet ayrımı göstermeyen brr bulgu olduğunu ve morfolojik yapı tipi ele alındığında Tip D'nin görülme sıkhğının fazaa olduğunu göstermektedir.
