of Karlıova earthquakes

Abstract (2. Language):
Reinforced concrete structures are most common
type of buildings constructed in Turkey. On the other
hand masonry structures are mostly preferred in
rural areas. The main reasons of this are that
masonry structures are more economical and
materials of masonry are more common in rural
areas. Majority of the masonry structures are built
lack of technical support and numerous fault can be
made during their construction. Thus, these type
buildings can be damaged heavily and collapsed
after natural disasters such as earthquakes. A
significant portion of the existing building stock of
Turkey is located in the earthquakes zones namely
DAFZ (east Anatolian earthquake zone) and KAFZ
(north Anatolian earthquake zone).Most of the
existing masonry buildings have already been built
in violation of the current Turkish seismic code.
Recent Earthquakes on the Eastern Anatolian Fault
zone of Turkey have received considerable attention
of many researchers. Most of the structures in the
rural area of eastern part of Turkey can be classified
as the traditional stone masonry buildings.
Therefore, structural hazards of Karlıova
earthquakes are very similar to those have been
observed on May 1st, 2003 Bingöl earthquake in
rural area. It is noted that such structural hazard is
unexpected for such moderate earthquakes. In this
study, it is proposed to discuss the general
properties of the Karlıova earthquakes and to
summarize the observed typical hazards of buildings
which have insufficient earthquake resistance.
It is reported that the Karlıova earthquakes caused
heavy building damages in the rural area. averagely
56% of the structures damaged in the 27 settlements.
Most of these structures can be classified as the
traditional stone masonry buildings. It is observed
that typical hazards of such buildings which have
insufficient earthquake resistance have been touched
to summarize the situation.

Türkiye’de son yıllarda Doğu Anadolu Fay (DAF) zonunda meydana gelen yoğun depremler
araştırmacıların yoğun ilgisine sebep olmuştur. 2005 Karlıova depremlerinde tespit edilen Kırsal
yapılardaki hasarların yoğunluğu yakın zamanda meydana gelen depremlerindekiler gibi deprem
büyüklükleri ile orantılı olmaması dikkat çekicidir. Geleneksel yığma sisteminin düşey taşıyıcı elemanlarının
deprem yükleri olarak yanal yükler altındaki dirençleri, betonarme veya çelik yapıların düşey taşıyıcı
elemanlarının deprem yükleri altındaki dirençlerine göre çok daha zayıf olmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Karlıova
depremlerinin genel özellikleri ile büyüklülerine göre beklenmedik ve bu bölgede büyük bir bölümü yığma
duvarlı olan kırsal yapılar hakkında fikir verici yapısal hasar durumu ele alınmıştır.
