From the Democratic Ideal to the Society of Spectacle: The Relationship Among the Individual, The Writer And The Terrorist Figures in Don Delillo’s Mao Iı

In the contemporary Western societies, the ways of
establishing domination on human masses have shifted from the
production-based social discipline in the industrial capitalism to
the disseminated practices of power in the post-industrial
capitalism. Media and visual politics, which are among political
devices that intensify the use of power in the post-industrial
societies, have banished the individual from the duty of political
participation, resistance to dominant cultural practices and
protection of his authenticity. ‘The Society of Spectacle’ defines the
media-ridden post-industrial consumer society wherethe
individual is cut off from his democratic potential.
In his novel Mao II, American author Don DeLillo
scrutinizes the role of the media and visual politics as major
devices of power in the contemporary society; and displays the
deviation from the democratic ideal via such concepts as mass
society, homogenization and depersonalization. It is overtly
observed in the novel that Western liberal democracies,
represented by the figures of the individual and the writer, loses
the critical distance to the Eastern totalitarianisms, represented by
the figure of the terrorist, in terms of the devices of political power
they utilize.The aim of this study is to analyze and enlighten the stages of
cultural and ideological hegemonization in the latecapitalist
societies through media and image politics. Therefore, evaluations
of the issue will proceed in consideration of the major problematic
in the relationship among the individual, the writer and the
terrorist.

Batı toplumlarında sanayi kapitalizminden endüstri sonrası
kapitalizme geçildiğinde insan yığınları üzerinde egemenlik kurma
biçimleri de tıpkı ekonomik etkinlikler gibi nitelikçe değişikliğe
uğramıştır. Üretim odaklı toplumsal disiplinden tüketime dayalı
hakimiyet biçimlerine ve merkezi iktidardan gündelik hayata
yayılmışiktidar pratiklerine geçişin gözlemlendiği dönem
toplumunda medya ve görsel anlatılar da hakim iktidar biçimini
pekiştiren birer araçtır. Medyanın ve görsel unsurların yaygınlığı
bireyi topluma politik katılım, baskıcı kültür pratiklerine direnişve
özgünlüğünü koruma sorumluluklarından soyutlamıştır. ‘Gösteri
toplumu’ olarak adlandırılan bu toplum bireyin demokratik gücünü
yitirdiği medya egemenliğindeki tüketim merkezli endüstri sonrası
Batı toplumunu niteler.
Amerikalı yazar Don DeLillo Mao II adlı romanında
medyanın ve görüntü politikalarının temel kapitalist iktidar
araçları olarak işlev gördüğü bir toplumda demokratik idealden
sapmayı kitleleşme, aynılaşma ve benliksizleşme kavramları
üzerinden gösterir. DeLillo’nun eserinde birey ve yazar
figürlerinin temsil ettiği Batı liberal demokrasileri ile terörist
figürünce temsil edilen Doğu totalitarizmlerinin kullandıkları
iktidar araçları bakımından gittikçe birbirleriyle benzeştikleri
görülür.Bu çalışmanın amacı DeLillo’nun eserinde geç dönem kapitalist
toplumunda medya ve imaj politikaları aracılığıyla gerçekleşen
kültürel hegemonya sürecinin aşamalarını irdelemektir. Bu
doğrultuda ilgili saptamalar eserdeki temel sorunsal olan birey,
yazar ve terörist ilişkileri üzerinden belirlenecektir
