Abstract (2. Language):
In this article which is aimed to stres on the social dimension of idea of commiting suicide in
Peyami Safa’s novel, Mahser, we tried to study the relations between psychologic problems
of the hero of novel and society. So we have come to the conclusion that the events which
coure the hero of novel to have psychic crisis are not superficial but on the contrary they have
fundemental reasons. That hero related to the collapse society. The conflict lived between
society and individual is the result of changing of civilization. Because of this, the reasons
that make the hero of novel to have identity problems essentially indicate that the society is
not able to be oriented to modernization. As a result what makes important the idea of
committing suicide in the novel is the writer’s this point of view.

Peyami Safa’nın Mahser romanındaki intihar fikrinin sosyal boyutunu vurgulamaya yönelik
olan bu çalısmada, roman kahramanının yasadığı psikolojik sıkıntılarla cemiyet arasındaki
iliskiyi incelemeye çalıstık. Böylece roman kahramanını ruh krizine sürükleyen olayların
yüzeysel olmayıp aksine köklü nedenlere dayandığı sonucuna vardık.Çünkü roman
kahramanının fikrî ve felsefî düzlemde bölünmeye uğraması aslında cemiyetteki sosyolojik
tekâmülün kesintiye uğramasıyla doğrudan ilgilidir. Cemiyetle birey arasındaki bu çatısma da
medeniyet değistirmenin yarattığı bir çatısmadır. Dolayısıyla kahramanı kimlik bunalımına
sokan sebepler özü itibariyle toplumun modernlesmeye adapte olamadığının göstergesidir.
Romandaki intihar fikrini önemli hale getiren de yazarın sözkonusu bu bakıs açısıdır.
