Abstract (2. Language):
The main purpose of science education is to educate people who can think like a scientist and make
suggestions on the basis of reason in order to understand the life in an easier way by researching and
questioning. In this context, the argumentation that is defined as the justification of the thesis through material
evidences is considered as new process in the natural science education, recently. The objective of the study is
to analyse the arguments of the 7th grade students within the frame of an activity related with eyesight, with
reference to Toulsmin Argumentation Model. The study was involved by 28 students in seventh grade in a
secondary school in Samsun. The preparation activities for students to familiar with the argument elements of
the Toulmin Argumentation Model were performed prior to the activities. The students were divided into five
groups and they were enabled firstly to answer the questions on eyesight activity individually, then with the
group and then argue with the class where the data is recorded. When the written and oral arguments of the
students are examined, it is seen that many of them had difficulties to find scientific reasons and supports for
their claims. On the other hand, few students could produce some scientific reasons to disprove the reasons of
other students during the discussions.

Fen eğitiminin temel amacı, hayatı daha kolay anlamak için araştırma sorgulama yaparak akıl yürütmeye dayalı
varsayımlarda bulunan ve bilim insanı gibi düşünebilen bireyler yetiştirmektir. Bu bağlamda fikirlerin, tezlerin
delilleme yoluyla somut veriler ışığında gerekçelendirilmesi süreci olarak tanımlanan argümantasyon son
dönemlerde fen eğitiminde yeni bir süreç olarak ele alınmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul 7. sınıf
öğrencilerinin görme duyusuyla ilgili yapılan etkinlik kapsamında ürettikleri argümanların, Toulmin
Argümantasyon Modeli çerçevesinde analiz etmektir. Çalışmaya Samsundaki bir ortaokulda yedinci sınıfta
okuyan 28 öğrenci katılmıştır. Öğrencilere etkinlik öncesi Toulmin Argümantasyon Modeli ile ilgili tartışma
öğelerini tanıtıcı hazırlık etkinliği yaptırılmıştır. Öğrenciler 5 gruba ayrılmış ve görme etkinliği için hazırlanan
soruları önce bireysel cevaplamaları, daha sonra grupla ve en son sınıfla tartışmaları sağlanmış ve veriler
kaydedilmiştir. Öğrencilerin yazılı ve sözlü argümanları incelendiğinde, öğrencilerin birçoğunun iddialarına
bilimsel gerekçeler ve destekler bulmakta zorlandıkları görülmüştür. Bunun yanında az sayıda öğrencinin
yapılan tartışmalarda diğer öğrencilerin gerekçelerini çürütecek bazı bilimsel gerekçeler üretebildikleri tespit
edilmiştir.
