Abstract (2. Language): 
The aim of this study is to investigate the results of an “English needs analysis” carried out in the English Departments of Dokuz Eylül University and Ondokuz Mayıs University. The study also attempts to examine the effectiveness of communicative approach in these departments from the standpoint of students’ individual needs and expectations. The study is based on a questionnaire of 307 undergraduates from the English Departments at the universities concerned. The three main objectives of the research were to (1) identify how the students perceived the use of various communicative skills, (2) identify students’ opinions on their various communicative language skills which they acquired, and (3) find out how students assessed the usefulness of the English courses given by the English Departments of these universities regarding their communicative language needs. The data obtained from the questionnaire revealed that the students cannot make use of the foreign language for their communicative purposes, and the present instructional language programmes remain insufficient in developing students’ communicative skills.

Bu araştırmanın amacı Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi ve Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi İngilizce Bölümlerinde öğrenim gören öğrencilere uygulanan “İngilizce ihtiyaç analizi” sonuçlarını incelemektir. Çalışma ayrıca bu bölümlerde iletişimci yaklaşımın etkinliğini, öğrencilerin bireysel ihtiyaçları ve beklentileri açısından incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma, bu üniversitelerin İngilizce Bölümlerindeki 307 öğrenciye uygulanan bir ankete dayanmaktadır. Araştırmanın üç temel amacı, (1) öğrencilerin edindikleri çeşitli iletişimsel dil becerileri konusunda görüşlerini saptamak, (2) öğrencilerin diğer beceriler arasında iletişimsel dil becerilerini nasıl değerlendirdiklerini ve bu becerileri kullanmadaki yeterliliklerini belirlemek ve (3) öğrencilerin iletişimsel dil ihtiyaçlarını dikkate alarak İngilizce derslerini nasıl değerlendirdiklerini incelemektir. Anket verileri, öğrencilerin yabancı dili iletişimsel dil amaçları doğrultusunda yeterince kullanamadığını ve mevcut dil eğitim programlarının öğrencilerin iletişimsel dil becerilerini geliştirmede yetersiz kaldığını göstermiştir.
