In this study, benzoic acid, which is food preservative, has been evaluated for genotoxicity in the wing somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) of Drosophila melanogaster. Third-instar larvae trans-heterozygous for two genetic markers mwh and flr, were treated by different concentrations(50 mM, 75 mM and 100 mM) of the test compound and lethality of the chemical were determined for each concentration. A positive correlation was observed between total mutation and the number of mutated wings. In addition, the observed mutations were classified according to the size and type of the mutation per wing. The present study shows that the correct administration of some food additives hasa significant effect on human health.

Bu çalışmada gıdalarda koruyucu olarak kullanılan benzoik asit’in genotoksik etkisi Drosophila melanogaster’de Somatik Mutasyon ve Rekombinasyon Testi ile değerlendirilmiştir. İki işaret geni taşıyan üç günlük trans-heterozigot larvalara farklı konsantrasyonlarda (50 mM, 75 mM ve 100 mM) test maddesi uygulanmıştır ve kimyasalın her konsantrasyonda letalitesi saptanmıştır. Deney sonuçlarına göre mutasyon gözlenen kanat sayısıile toplam mutasyon arasında pozitif bir ilişki belirlenmiştir. Buna ilâve olarak her kanatta gözlenen mutasyonlar sayıve tipine göre de sınıflandırılmışlardır. Bu çalışma gıda katkımaddelerinin doğru kullanımının insan sağlığıaçısından önemli bir etkiye sahip olduğunu göstermektedir.
