In the (old) Democratic German Republic, govenmental socialism, especially in the beginning, took the controlling and oppressive roles in the construction of all the institutes of the country. The novella entitled "Der fremde Freund" by Christoph Hein was written under these conditions in 1982. After one year, it was published in west Germany under the title "Drachenblut". "Suppressing" defense mechanism which is applied by the main character to struggle against the hardships in the country in the novel forms the main motive. On the surface structure the work is apparently an eulogy, however, from the psychoanalytical perspective it is a remarkable example of irony.

(Eski) Demokratik Alman Cumhuriyetinde özellikle başlarda, devlet sosyalizmi ülkede bütün kurumlarıyla yapılandırma adına her alanda kontrolcü ve baskıcı bir rol üstlenmişti. "Der fremde Freund" Christoph Hein'ın işte bu koşullarda 1982 yılında yayımlanmış olan novelinin adı. Yapıt bir yıl sonra "Drachenblut" adıyla Batı Almanya'da da yayımlanıyor. Baş kişisinin yaşamının her alanında uygulayıp hararetle savunduğu ve ülkedeki koşullarla örtüşme sağlayan "bastırma" savunma mekanizması novelin de ana motivini oluşturmaktadır. Yüzeysel yaklaşımda söz konusu mekanizmaya edebi bir methiye gibi görünen yapıt, psikoanalitik değerlendirmede ise bir üslup aracı olan ironinin mükemmel bir örneği olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır.
