Some plant species' seeds have dormancy and are not able to germinate in suitable environment. One of the ways of breaking seed dormancy is naked stratification at controlled moisture content. In this method, during the treatment, the moisture content of seed is restrained at a certain level that is adequate for the dormancy breaking but not sufficient for the germination of seeds. The method provides dormancy breaking for all the treated seeds, fast and homogenous germination, germination at broader temperature interval besides the optimum germination temperature, and less fungi attacks during the stratification.

Kazı bitki türlerinin tohumlarında dormansi (çimlenme engeli) bulunmakta ve bu dormansili tohumlar elverişli ortama rağmen çimlenememektedirler. Tohumlardaki dormansiyi gidermenin yollarından biri tohumlara nem denetimli çıplak katlama (NDÇK) uygulamaktır. Bu yöntemde tohumların nemi, katlama sırasında belli bir nem oranında tutulur. Bu nem içeriği, tohumun dormansisinin kırılması için yeterli, fakat tohumun çimlenmesi için kısıtlayıcı bir eşik değerdir. Yöntem, katlamadaki bütün tohumların dormansisinin sorunsuz olarak giderilmesi, daha hızlı ve homojen çimlenme, tohumların optimum çimlenme sıcaklığının ötesinde daha geniş bir sıcaklık aralığında çimlenebilmesi ve katlama sırasında tohumlarda daha az mantar zararı görülmesi gibi avantajlar sağlamaktadır.
