Comparative analysis between sports productivity and efficiency in professional football clubs

In the field of professional football, unlike in other sectors, not always seeks to maximize the value of the sports organization. Given this circumstance, the article analyzes whether sports clubs seek an optimal result at the expense of increasing financial stress. The hypothesis is that there is no balance between technical efficiency and sporting success. A comparison between the technical efficiency analysis assessed by DEA and sports efficiency reflected in the sports club rankings that during the period 2004-2011 played at least one season in 1st division professional soccer league is done. A number of factors are used previously extracted by principal component analysis and collect the variability of financial results in economic terms. The result of the study shows that few clubs throughout those years manage to balance the technical and sporting efficiency.

En el sector de fútbol profesional, al contrario que en otros sectores, no siempre se busca maximizar el valor de la organización deportiva. Teniendo en cuenta esta circunstancia, el artículo analiza si los clubes buscan un resultado deportivo óptimo a costa de aumentar el estrés financiero. La hipótesis de partida es que no existe equilibrio entre eficiencia técnica y éxito deportivo. Se realiza una comparativa entre la eficiencia técnica evaluada mediante análisis DEA y la eficiencia deportiva reflejada en la clasificación deportiva de clubes que durante el período 2004-2011 jugaron, al menos una temporada, en 1ª división de la liga de fútbol profesional. Se utilizan como variables para el análisis una serie de factores extraídos previamente mediante análisis de componentes principales que recogen la variabilidad de los resultados en términos económicos financieros. El resultado del estudio señala que pocos clubes, a lo largo de esos años, consiguen equilibrar la eficiencia técnica y deportiva.
