THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE LEVEL OF THE PRIMARY CLASS TEACHERS` IN THE COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT FIELD AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS OF THEIR STUDENTS

Abstract (2. Language):
In this research, it is aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge
level of the primary class teachers` in the cognitive development field and academic
success of their students. This research is designed in the relational analysis model. For
the research, 2008-2009 teaching year, 63 class teachers and 1132 students has been
reached. In the study, in order to determine the knowledge level of the educators about
cognitive development, “cognitive development knowledge test” that is developed by
the researchers has been employed. In order to determine academic success of the
students, "Student Achievement Test" that is applied in the schools is used. In
accordance with the aims of the research, descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U Test,
Kruskal-Wallis H test and correlation analysis were used within the framework of the
raw data analysis related with the problem.
According to research findings, there is a positive, medium level and meaningful
relation between the knowledge level of the primary class teachers in the cognitive
development level and the general academic success level of their students. Moreover,
positive, medium level and meaningful relation has been found between the knowledge
level of the teachers in the cognitive development level and the courses such as Life
Knowledge, Turkish, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science and Technology at the
secondary level. These results shows the primary class teachers’ knowledge level is
significantly related with the students' academic achievement. Based on the findings
obtained, it can be said that doing some studies on developing the primary teachers`
knowledge level in the areas of cognitive development will improve students' academic
success efforts.
