Despite slowdown in the rate of increase of defense spending in some periods, the level of defense expenditures is still high in most regional of the world. It is faced the major two issues in researches relate to defense expenditures: These are difficulties of the definitions of defense expenditures and data collection. A standart definition of defense expenditures is not available. This case creates difficult for international comparisons. An assessment of effects of defense expenditures on economic growth to be a measure of military strenght is crucial for example to define optimal the level of defense expenditures. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation between defense expenditures and economic growth. In this study, The relation between defense expenditure and economic growth is explained from the view of the adverse and positive effects of defense expenditures on growth and demand-supply side approaches. The following section investigetes the level of defense expenditures and the possible impacts of defense expenditures on growth in Turkey form point of correlation among education, health and defense expenditures.

Savunma harcamalarındaki artış oranları bazı dönemlerde düşmesine rağmen, dünyanın birçok bölgesinde hala oldukça yüksektir. Savunma harcamalarıyla ilgili araştırmalarda başlıca iki sorunla karşılaşılır. Bunlar; savunma harcamalarının tanımı ve veri toplama zorluluğundan oluşmaktadır. Bu sorunlar özellikle uluslararası karşılaştırmalarda güçlük yaratmaktadırlar. Askeri gücün bir göstergesi olarak, savunma harcamalarının ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirmek, savunma harcamalarının optimum düzeyini belirleme gibi birçok alanlarda önem taşıyan bir konudur. Bu makalenin amacı, savunma harcamaları ve ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır. Çalışmada savunma harcamaları ve ekonomik büyüme ilişkisi; talep ve arz yönlü yaklaşımlar açısından açıklanmaktadır.Takip eden bölümde, Türkiye’deki savunma harcamalarının düzeyi ve ekonomik büyüme üzerinde olası etkileri, savunma harcamaları ile eğitim ve sağlık harcamaları arasındaki korelasyona dayalı olarak incelenmektedir.
