Abstract (2. Language):
Occlusal splints are widely used in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders. An occlusal splint is a device that is applied to maxilla or mandibula which is usually made of hard acrylic. Occlusal splints are used to fix and stabilize the functions of temporomandibular joints, to improve the functions of masticatory system, to alter abnormal muscle activity and to protect the teeth from attrition and traumatic forces. Many occlusal appliances have been used in temporomandibular disorders, the most widely-used types are stabilization splint, anterior bite plane, mandibular repositioning appliance and soft appliance. Although its mechanism is controversial, occlusal splints give successful results in the cases with right indication. Further investigation is necessary for better treatment of the temporomandibular disorders.
