Abstract (2. Language):
This article examines the history of press ethics and history of institutionalisation of professional journalism organisations that contributed to develop codes of ethics for press, throughout the Republic era in Turkey. The history of professional journalism organisations and the development of journalism in Turkey is, almost, the history of political struggle in Turkey. In 1930's, the 1st Press Congress and the Press Union are the first two institutions in Turkish Republic that put effort to form some ethical norms in journalism. After World War II, in Turkey, as a result of democratisation movements, the Press Union was abolished by the government in 1946 and Turkish journalists Association was established. After a long time, in 1960, Honour Council of Press was established as a volunteer organisation for journalists and the press in Turkey. During 1980% as a result of some Turkish journalists' efforts, in 1988, Press Council was established. Press Council formed and declared the codes of ethics of press.
