Tohum teknolojisinin temel konularından bir tanesi tohum testi olup, 100 yıldan fazla bir süredir bu konudaki çalışmalar gelişme göstererek devam etmektedir. Buna rağmen yapılan araştırmalarda, tohum testleri sonuçlarının, tohum partilerinin performans ve kalitesini tam olarak ortaya koyamadığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu yetersizlik sonucunda tohum gücü kavramı gündeme gelmiş ve bu gücün ortaya konması yönünde çalışmalar yoğunlaşmıştır. Günümüzde tohum gücünün belirlenmesi kapsamında üzerinde çalışılan, hızlandırılmış yaşlandırma, salgı iletkenliği ve çimlenme hızı testlerinin her birisi gelecek için ümit vermektedir. Bu yazıda, tohum gücü ve bunun genel tohum kalitesi kavramı içerisindeki yeri tanıtılmaya çalışılmıştır. Tohum gücünün test edilmesi yöntemleri ormancılık kapsamında yapılan çalışmalar ve gelişmeler çerçevesinde örneklerle açıklanmış olup, bu yöntemlerin ormancılık açısından uygulanabilirliği hakkında değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır.
