Abstract (2. Language):
The SS Missouri, the biggest warship of the US Navy which acquired a historial significance because of the fact that the Japonese surrender agreement was signed on board of this ship after World War II, visited the Harbour of İstan¬bul between April 5-9. This visit, which was the first step of the Cold War, in other words the first attempt of the US to establish a powerful naval force around the Mediterranean was observed by both the world public and the inhabitants of İstanbul.
The apparement motive behind the Missouri's visit was to bring the body of Muñir Ertegün, the Turkish Ambassador, to his native country. However, the actual reason was to warn the Soviet government and to give support to the anti-communist powers in the south of Soviet Union. Missouri was visited by both the political and religious leaders in Pireus and Naples. The Greek Patriarch and the Pope hosted the crew of the Missouri.
This exagerated show lasted for a month and ended in Morocco.

ABD Donanmasının en büyük gemisi olan, II. Dünya Savaşından sonra Japonya'nın teslim anlaşması güvertesinde imzalandığı için tarihsel bir önem kazanan SS Missouri zırhlısı 5-9 Nisan 1946 günlerinde İstanbul Limanı'nı ziyaret eder. Soğuk avaş'ın, diğer bir deyişle ABD'nin Akdeniz'e güçlü bir denizgücü yerleştirme girişiminin ilk adımlarından olan bu ziyaret hem ulus¬lararası kamuoyunca hem de İstanbullularca illgiyle izlenir.
Missouri'nin ziyaretinin görünürdeki amacı ABD'de ölen TC büyükelçisi Mehmet Münir Ertegün'ün cenazesini anavatana getirmektir. Ancak esas amaç, Sovyetler'e gözdağı vermek, Sovyetler'in güneyindeki anti-komünist güçlere arka çıkmaktır. Missouri zırhlısı istanbul'dan sonra uğradığı Pire'de ve Napoli'de hem siyasal hem de dinsel liderlerce ziyaret edilir. Yunan Ortodoks Kilisesi Patriği ve Papa Missouri'nin mürettebatını gösterişli törenlerle kabul eder. Bir ay süren bu gövde gösterisi, Fas'ın Tanca limanında sona erer.
