Abstract (2. Language):
The "GAP" Region is one of the most important regions in Turkey, from the
viewpoint of having the highest potential in land and water resources. Irrigation, by
projects, in the "GAP" areas was started in the Harran P1ain in 1995. In the "GAP"
Region, an area of 183.000 ha has been opened for irrigation in the 1998 irrigation
season. However, in Harran, an area of 120.000 ha, its network having been
completed in 1999, started to be irrigated.
Surface irrigation methods are being used extensively in the Region. These
methods are known to be of low irrigation efficiency, extreme water and soil losses.
Studies in the Region have shown that in all the systems of the Region there is a
tendency of excessive irrigation. It was determined that 0.15-7 fold of required water
amount has been applied. Excessive use of water would causes to create serious
problems such as salinity, water table, and wetness. For example, in the irrigation of
the Harran plain, problems of salinity and hight water table appeared, related to soil properties, and applied irrigation methods. Reasons such as the heavy texture of the
soil, water consumption by plants and high evaporation losses as well as inexistence
of drainage system, cause increase in the probability of developing the risk of
salinity in Harran. Through studies executed in Akçakale and surroundings it was
determined that high ground water constitute a great risk. The latest measurements
accomplished between 1997-1999 show that lands with ground water between 0 and
1.0 m comprise 21-26 % of the total irrigated areas and those between 1.0 and 2.0 m
comprise 26 % to 37 %.
The areas, which have salinity and alkalinity problems are located at the around
of Akçakale, south part of Harran Plain. In this area, some soil series have serious
salinity problem. Especially, the soil series located near the edge of Cullap Stream
bed have boron contamination as well as salinity problem.

Abstract (Original Language):
Ova
toprakların ağır bünyeli oluşları, kullanılan sulama yöntemleri, buharlaşma ve su
tüketimi kayıplarının yüksekliği, tuzluluk ve taban suyu sorunlarına neden olmuştur.
Yapılan son ölçmelerde, 1997-1999, taban suyunun 0-1.0 derinlikte olan alanların
%21-26; 1.0 -2.0 m de olanların ise %26-37 olduğu anlaşılmıştır.
Tuzlu-alkali alanlar, Alçakale civarında bulunmaktadır. Buradaki bazı toprak
serilerinde anılan sorun, çok ciddi boyutlara ulaşmıştır. Özellikle, Cullap Deresi
çevresinde bulunan topraklarda tuzluluğun yanında bor bulaşıklığı da saptanmıştır.
