In this study azithromycin was investigated retrospectively for the presence of any phagocytic activity promoting action in addition to its direct antimicrobial effect in chlamydial cervicitis. Fifty four patients, who had admitted to Uludağ University Medical Faculty Obstetrics and Gynaecology outpatient clinics with the complaint of recurrent vaginal discharge and had been found to have chlamydial genital infection on pelvic examination, fresh and gram examinations and chlamydial antigen assay were included in the study. Both the patients and their partners had been prescribed a single 1 gram oral dose of azithromycin concomitantly. Phagocytic index, particle counts and blood leukocyte counts just before and ten days after the treatment were examined and no significant difference was found between the pre- and posttreatment values (p>0.05). Control pelvic examination, fresh and gram examinations and chlamydial antigen assay were all negative 1 month after the therapy. Azithromycin was found to be effective in chlamydial infections. Single dose usage makes it advantageous for obtaining the complete cure, but it has no effect on phagocytosis.

Bu çalışmada klamidya servisiti bulunan olgularda azitromisinin direkt antimikrobiyal etkisinin yanı sıra, makrofajların fagositik aktivitesini de arttırıp artırmadığı retrospektif olarak araştırıldı. Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Kadın Hastalıkları ve Doğum Ana Bilim Dalı polikliniğine tekrarlayan vajinal akıntı şikayeti ile başvuran, pelvik muayene, fresh preparat, gram boyama, ve klamidya antijen tetkikleri sonucunda klamidya enfeksiyonu düşünülerek kendisine ve partnerine eş zamanlı 1 gram tek doz p.o. azitromisin tedavisi uygulanmış olan 54 olgu çalışma kapsamına alındı. Olguların tedavi öncesi ve on gün sonrasına ait fagositik index, partikül sayısı ve kan lökosit sayımı incelendi ve anlamlı bir farklılık saptanmadı (p>0.05). Tedaviden bir ay sonraki kontrol sırasında pelvik muayene, fresh preparat, gram boyama, ve klamidya antijen tetkikleri negatifti. Azitromisinin klamidya enfeksiyonu olgularında başarılı sonuç verdiği, tek doz kullanım kolaylığının hasta açısından bir avantaj oluşturduğu, ancak fagositoz üzerine uyarıcı bir etkisinin olmadığı görüldü.
