Perceptions of Workplace Bullying among Social Security Institute Employees: Prevalence, Types, Antecedents and Individual Coping Responses

Journal Name:

Publication Year:

Abstract (2. Language):
The present study aimed to explore the prevalence, characteristics and perceived causes of workplace bullying among a group of employees working in social security institutes in the Anatolian part of Istanbul. It also aimed to identify what coping responses they gave on being bullied. 589 employees responded to a self-report questionnaire and prevalence of bullying was estimated as 23.7%. Targets experienced predominantly work-related negative acts such as excessive work monitoring. Superiors were identified as perpetrators in 86% of the bullying cases. Poor management and hostile work environment were perceived as the most important causes of bullying. Regarding the individual responses to bullying, 60% of non-targets claimed that they would complain to immediate manager, while 51% to senior manager. Yet, 24% of targets actually complained to immediate manager, 32% to senior manager but 57% asked support of family and/or friends.
