Abstract (2. Language): 
In this study, the focus is on the relation between culture and mind put forward by Goodenough, Levi-Strauss and Geertz, respectively, the pioneers of cognitive anthropology, structural anthropology and symbolic anthropology. Although they have different epistemological and methodological orientations, all of them share the premise that culture and society are distinct realms and regard mind as a means of cultural conceptualization. Goodenough sees cultures as systems of knowledge. In other words, cultures are systems of common categorization, a reflection of cognitive models. Levi-Strauss visualizes cultures as the symbolic expression of the individual minds. On the other hand, Geertz defines cultures as systems of shared symbols and meanings and suggests that cultures are "between the minds of individuals, not in them". However, considering cultures only as a function of mind leads to the danger of breaking anthropology from real life and social facts. The solution to this problem is to develop a dynamic concept of culture inclusive of social realms.

Bu çalışmada, bilişsel antropoloji, yapısal antropoloji ve simgesel antropolojinin temsilcilerinden, sırası ile, Goodenough, Levi-Strauss ve Geertz'in kültür ve zihin kavramları arasında kurduğu ilişkisellik konu edinilmiştir. Farklı epistemolojik ve metodolojik yönelimleri olmasına rağmen, her üç yaklaşım da kültürel ve sosyal alanların birbirinden ayrı olduğu öncülünü paylaşırlar ve kültürü kavramlaştırmanın bir aracı olarak zihni ele alırlar. Goodenough, kültürü bilgi sistemleri olarak kabul eder. Başka bir deyişle, kültür, bilişsel modellerin bir yansıması olan ortak kategorize sistemleridir. Levi-Strauss ise, kültürü insan zihninin simgesel ifadeleri olarak görür. Öte yandan, Geertz kültürü ortak simgeler ve anlamlar sistemi olarak tanımlar ve kültürün, "bireylerin zihinlerinde değil, onların zihinleri arasında olduğunu" ileri sürer. Ne var ki, kültürü sadece zihnin bir fonksiyonu olarak ele almak, antropolojiyi gerçek hayattan ve sosyal olgulardan koparma tehlikesini doğurur. Bunun çözümü, sosyal alanları kültür kavramı içine dahil ederek, daha dinamik bir kültür anlayışı geliştirmektir.
