Çeşitli tanımlan olmakla beraber toprak; adli açıdan, yeryüzünde ya da yeryüzüne yakın kısımlarda parçalanmış olarak bulunan yüzey materyali olarak tanımlanabilir. Toprak adli olaylarda sınıfsal delil olarak değerlendirilir. Şüphelinin giysisinde, ayakkabısında veya bir otomobilde bulunan kurumuş çamur veya toprak ile olay yerindeki toprak örnekleri mukayese edilerek şüphelinin veya nesnenin olay yeri ile ilişkisi ortaya çıkartılabilir. Toprak ve toprakla ilgili materyallerin adli incelenmelerinde çeşitli metotlar kullanılmaktadır.
