MOTHERS' KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD HIGH FEVER IN CHILDREN LIVING IN KARABAĞLAR

Abstract (2. Language):
Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of mothers about high fever in children.
Methods: 132 mothers with low educational status, living in Karabağlar Izmir were interviewed. Interviews were performed using a structured questionnaire.
Results: 40.9% of the mothers had a thermometer at home and 35.6% could use a thermometer. 36.4% knew the normal body temperature. 46.9% of the mothers thought that high fever was most likely to cause seizures. 80 mothers (60.6%) treated high fever using paracetamol. Sources of information for administering antipyretic drugs were mothers' or friends experience (45.5%) and medical personnel (42.4%). After the questionnaire, brief information about high fever and its management was given, the use of a thermometer was described demonstrated and all moth¬ers were provided with a thermometer. 3-6 months after the first meeting, 47 of the mothers were reinterviewed. 29 of them (61.7%) could use a thermometer and all of them knew the nor¬mal body temperature.
Conclusion: As conclusion, there is a lack in parental knowledge of high fever and its treatment. Mothers were interested in answering the questionnaire, and in taking the information given; results showed that they did benefit.

Amaç: Çalışmamızda bölgemizde yaşayan annelerin yüksek ateş ile ilgili bilgi ve yaklaşımlarını değerlendirmeye çalıştık.
Yöntem: Çalışmaya alınan anneler izmir Karabağlar bölgesinde yaşayan, eğitim düzeyi düşük kişilerden oluşmaktaydı. Polikliniğimize herhangi bir sebeple başvuran 132 anneye ateşle ilgili çok sorulu anket, yüz yüze uygulandı.
Bulgular: Annelerin %40.9'unda termometre vardı ve % 35.6'sı çocuklarının ateşini termometre ile ölçebiliyordu. Annelerin %36.4'ü, normal ateşi 36-37 derece olarak biliyordu. Yüksek ateş komplikasyonu olarak %46.9'u havaleyi belirtmişti. Ateşli çocuklarına yaklaşımları sorulduğunda; 80 anne (%60.6) parasetamol kullandığını belirtti. 60 anne (%45.5), kullandıkları ilacın dozunu aile ve komşu tavsiyesi ile ayarlıyor, sadece 56 anne (%42.4) doz ayar¬lamasını doktor tavsiyesine göre yapıyordu. Anket sonunda anne¬lere ateş hakkında temel bilgiler verildi, cıvalı termometre ile ateş ölçümü gösterildi, termometresi olmayan tüm annelere birer ter¬mometre verildi. ilk görüşmeden 3-6 ay sonra 47 anneyle tekrar görüşüldü ve ateş hakkında bildikleri ve termometre kullanımları sorgulandı. 47 annenin 29'u (%61.7) derece kullanabiliyordu. Tüm anneler normal ateşi 36-37 derece arasında bildirdi.
Sonuç: Çalışmamızda annelerin ateş hakkındaki bilgilerinin yetersiz ve yaklaşımlarının yanlış olduğu gözlendi.Verilen eğitimi severek dinledikleri ve faydalandıkları görüldü.
