Abstract (2. Language): 
This study presents a comparative analysis of two well-known novels in English and Turkish literature in order to reveal the similar motive – responsibility and pity – of the two protagonists in their attempt at covering their real beings. The paper maintains that such genuine and universal feelings towards the people around may lead to fatal and contemptible consequences as is seen in Graham Greene’s The Heart of the Matter and Reşat Nuri Güntekin’s Acımak. Both novels pinpoint the fact that appearance does not always correspond to reality.

Bu çalışmada; Grahan Greene’nin The Heart of the Matter ve Reşat Nuri Güntekin’in Acımak romanlarındaki iki kahramanın gerçek benliklerini saklama girişimlerinin arkasındaki güdü benzerlikleri kıyaslamalı olarak analiz edilmiştir. Makalemizde adı geçen iki romanın incelenmesi sonucunda; kahramanların toplumdaki diğer fertlere karşı sorumluluk duymaları ve acıma duygusu göstermelerinin onlara üzücü ve ölümcül sonuçlar getirdiği görülmüştür. Romanların ikisinde de dış görünüşün her zaman gerçeği yansıtmadığı düşüncesi ortaya konmuştur.
