ABBREVIATIONS USED IN LEGAL TEXTS AND THEIR TRANSLATIONS

Abstract (2. Language):
During the translation process, analysis of the abbreviations used in the texts to be translated significantly influences the
translation process. Abbreviations are linguistic usages employed for purposes of economization not only in legal texts, but
also others. It is well-nigh impossible to translate unless said abbreviations are duly analyzed. Abbreviations pose a problem in
the translation process for all translators backed / not backed by knowledge on the specific field or specialized / not specialized
in the translation of legal texts. That is why looking up what they stand for and deciding how to express or reformulate them
in the target language before starting the translation process is important to facilitate and accelerate the process and make
the text more comprehensible for the target-culture readers. The purpose of this study is to discuss translation problems
associated with abbreviations used in Turkish and French legal texts and to emphasize the importance of analysis of these
structures and to propose potential solutions. In the context of this study, we have screened legal texts in both Turkish and
French, and tried to determine the abbreviations used in these texts. Another subject of debate contained herein is focused
on what attitude the translators should adopt in translation of such abbreviations.

Çeviri sürecinde çevrilecek metinlerde kullanılan kısaltmaların çözümlenmesi çeviri sürecini önemli derecede etkilemektedir.
Kısaltmalar, diğer metinlerde olduğu gibi, hukuk metinlerinde de ekonomi amacıyla yapılan dilsel kullanımlardır. Bu kısaltmaları
çözümlemeden çeviri yapmak neredeyse olanaksızdır. Alan bilgisi olan/olmayan ve hukuk metinleri çevirisi alanında uzman
olan/olmayan çevirmenler için kısaltmalar çeviri sorunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu nedenle, çeviriye başlamadan önce, bu
kısaltmaların açılımını araştırmak ve erek dile nasıl aktarılacağını belirlemek hem çevirmenin çeviri sürecini hızlandırması,
hem de çevrilecek metnin erek kültür okuyucusu için daha anlaşılır olması bakımından önemlidir. Çalışmanın amacı, Türk
ve Fransız hukuk metinlerindeki kısaltmaların kullanımına bağlı çeviri sorunlarını tartışmak, bu yapıların çözümlenmesinin
çeviri sürecindeki önemini vurgulamak ve olası çözüm önerileri sunmaktır. Araştırma bağlamında Türkçe ve Fransızca hukuk
metinleri taranmış ve bu metinlerde hangi kısaltmaların kullanıldıkları saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu kısaltmaların çevirisinde
çevirmenlerin nasıl bir tutum sergilemeleri gerektiği konusu tartışılmıştır.
