In this study it was aimed to present the general psychological situations of the Professional athletes after they retire and to create a resource for other resourchers. While retirement from sport occurs in a voluntary and involuntary way, athletes face with psychological, social, financial, difficulties after retirement. The problems in retirement are usually related to the loss of identity and self-esteem because athlete’s self-esteem and identity are related to sport, they have a negative transition end face with identity confision. Retirement means a beginning at new life. This means that athlete is responsible for taking on differant roles in both social environment and family life. Especially, involuntary retirement has heavier psychological problems. Some athletes retired from high-level sports have economical problems, their expectance from life decrease, some get into depression and therefore sleep problems, loss of fitness, physcical problems because of getting old arise. Therefore drug use and alcohol are seen as an important problem. The athletes who do not have any other career goals are more anxious about getting retired. As a result identity problems ocur in company with compliance issues to retirement. Psychological effects such as stress, depression even tendency of commit suicide can be taken place depending level of athletic identity and voluntary or involuntary retirement

Bu çalışmada profesyonel olarak spor yapanların emekliliğe geçiş dönemiyle beraber yaşadıkları psikolojik durumun genel olarak ortaya konması ve Türk spor literatüründe yer almayan “spor emekliliği” kavramının yerleşmesi sağlanarak diğer araştırmacılara kaynak oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır. Spordan emeklilik gönüllü ve gönülsüz olarak meydana gelmekle beraber sporcular emekli olduktan sonra psikolojik, sosyal, mali zorluklarla karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Emeklilikte problemler genellikle kimlik ve özsaygı kaybıyla ilişkili olup sporcunun özsaygısı ve kimliği spora bağlı olduğundan olumsuz geçiş yaşamakta ve kimlik karmaşasıyla karşılaşmaktadır. Bu durum gerek sosyal çevrede, gerek aile hayatında farklı roller üstlenmeye sebep olmaktadır. Özellikle gönülsüz emekliliğin daha ağır psikolojik sorunları olmaktadır. Üst düzey sporlardan emeklilikte birçok sporcu ekonomik sıkıntılar çekmekte, hayattaki beklentileri azalmakta, bazıları depresyona girmekte ve buna bağlı olarak uyku sorunları, zindelik kaybı, mali güçlükler, yaşlanmaya bağlı fiziksel güçlük riski içinde olmaktadır. Bu yüzden ilaç ve alkol kullanımı da önemli bir sorun olarak çıkmaktadır. Hayatlarının geri kalanında başka bir kariyer hedefi olmayan sporcular daha fazla emeklilik korkusu yaşamaktadır. Sonuç olarak; kimlik sorunuyla beraber emekliliğe uyum sorunları ortaya çıkmakta, sahip olunan kimliğin derecesine, gönüllü ve gönülsüz emeklilik durumuna bağlı olarak stres, depresyon gibi psikolojik belirtiler hatta intihar eğilimleri oluşabilmektedir
