Abstract (2. Language):
The progressive development of the European Union (EU) in general and the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in particular, which are seen as major European challenges in an economically polarising world, occupy a significant place in our every day life. This article explains the role of the European Monetary System (EMS), the EMU, and the European Currency Unit (ECU) as a historic event in the European integration process and also assesses the consequences of post-EMU circumstances – economically and politically – from the integrationist perspective.
