AN APPROACH TO URBAN SPACE: CASTELLS

Journal Name:

Publication Year:

Abstract (2. Language):
In this review article, we have discussed Castells' conceptualization of urban space in his well-known study: The Urban Question. His main objective is to go beyond both the empricism of geographical description and the culturalist point of view that conceives space as if it was a white page on which the actions of groups and institutions are inscribed. With this aim, he attempts to combine two different modes of explanation within a single framework. On the one hand, he concentrates on spatial explanations of social processes, or in other words, of spatializations of social processes and on the other, he studies the social, economic and institutional organization of space. In this framework, production is taken as a basic element of the social reality. Therefore, the special emphasis is given to the study of articulation of the economic system in space. Here the space is seen as a material product. Thus, in the study of space, the main concern is towards finding out the structural and conjuncture laws that govern the existence and transformation of that product and its articulation with the other elements of the historical reality.
