Abstract (2. Language):
In this review the significance of sonic and ultrasonic scalers in the initial phase of periodontal therapy were evaluated. Although, during the initial phase of periodontal therapy, ultrasonic scalers seem to be as efficient as hand instruments, since they are not cabaple of working in deep and fibrotic periodontal pockets. Furthermore, patients with cardiac pacemakers or systemic infections are not good candidates for ultrasonic therapy. Sonic scalers do have some advantages over ultrasonic scalers. They are cost efficient, easy to sterilize and smaller in shape. But it would be an overestimation to claim that sonic scalers could replace ultrasonic scalers. There are not enough investigations on the efficiancy of sonic scalers.
