An investigation of literacy beliefs of pre-school children’s parents

This study aims to find out what the literacy beliefs of parents who have children at the preschool education period. The sample of the study is composed of 374 family members with children between the ages of 4 and 6, in the academic year of 2010-2011. As the data collection tools in this study, the Parent Reading Belief Inventory (PRBI), the Inventory of Maternal Literacy, the Inventory of Child Literacy Behaviours (CLB) and the Personal Information Form were used. For the data analysis, the mean and the standard deviation were calculated. . Also, t-test, one-way variance analysis, pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise linear regression analysis were calculated. As can be seen in the findings, the parents –though it was very limited- chose “Strongly disagree” and “Disagree” options. The scores of the participant parents, which were based on the PRBI, were mostly at the “Agree” and “Strongly Agree” options. These results may imply that parents have strong beliefs in reading.

Bu araştırmanın temel amacı, okul öncesi çağda çocuğu olan ebeveynlerin okuma inançlarının incelenmesidir. Bu araştırma betimsel ilişkisel bir çalışmadır. Araştırmanın evrenini Adana ili merkez ilçelerinde (Seyhan, Yüreğir, Çukurova, Sarıçam) yaşayan ve 4-6 yaş grubunda çocuğu olan ebeveynler oluşturmuştur. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu ise bu araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 374 ebeveyn oluşturmuştur. Bu araştırmada veri toplama araçları olarak; Aile Okuma İnancı Ölçeği [Parent Reading Belief Inventory,(PRBI)], Ev Ortamında Okuma Faaliyetleri Ölçeği [Maternal Literacy practice (MLP)] ve Çocuğun Okuma Faaliyetlerini Gözlem Ölçeği [Child literacy behaviours (CLB)] ölçekleri ile araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen Kişisel Bilgiler Formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerinin analizinde aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma gibi betimsel istatistikleri ile t-testi, tekyönlü varyans analizi teknikleri ile pearson korelasyon katsayısı, kullanılmıştır. Bulgular incelendiğinde; ebeveynlerin okuma inançlarına ilişkin yanıtlarının küçük bir bölümünün de olsa “asla katılmıyorum” ile “katılmıyorum” seçeneklerinde olduğu görülmüştür. Araştırmaya katılan ebeveynlerin aile okuma inancı ortalama puanlarının büyük bir çoğunlukla “katılıyorum” ile “tamamen katılıyorum” seçeneklerine karşılık geldiği bulunmuştur. Bu sonuçlar, ebeveynlerin okumaya ilişkin güçlü bir inanca sahip oldukları şeklinde yorumlanabilir.
