In this study, the effects of etching on the surface morphology of two light-cured and one self-cured glass ionomer base/liner cements were examined. lonobond, Baseline and Vitrebond glass ionomer cements were used and etching was with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 and 60 second periods. The surfaces ofthe unetched cements, set in air were used as controls. In the lonobond group, the surfaces of the etched samples were quite rough and cavitation was evident. The surfaces of the unetched samples, set in air displayed similar retention to the unetched ones. In the Baseline cement group, on the surfaces of the etched samples significant dissolution of the gel matrix surrounding the particles was evident, whereas more matrix remained around the particles on the unetched ones. Of all the groups, the surfaces least effected by etching were in the Vitrebond group, in which the unetched surfaces displayed more retention than did the etched ones. SEM micrographs showed the unetched cement surfaces to be topographically almost as retentive as the etched ones in all groups. These results suggest that there is no need to etch surfaces prior to restoration with composite resins.

Bu çalışmada ikisi ışınla (Baseline ve Vİtrebond) biri de kimyasal (lonobond) olarak sertleşen üç farklı cam iyono-mer siman yüzeylerine asit uygulanmasının (etching) yüzey morfolojisi üzerine etkileri incelenmiştir. Düzgün yüzeyde sertleştirilen siman yüzeylerine 30 ve 60 sn.lik periyotlarla % 37'lik fosforik asit jel uygulandı. Pozitif kontrol grubunda normal olarak açık havada sertleştirilen ve asit uygulanmayan siman örnekleri kullanıldı. lonobond siman örneklerinde asitlenmiş yüzeylerin oldukça pürüzlü olduğu ve bazı kavitasyonlar meydana geldiği, asit uygulanmamış ve açık havada sertleştirilmiş örneklerde de benzer şekilde yüzeyin retantif olduğu görülmüştür. Baseline sima n örneklerinde asit uygulanmış yüzeylerde, tanecikler etrafındaki jel matriksin çözündüğü, asit uygulanmamış örneklerde ise tanecikler etrafında kısmen mat-riks bulunduğu görülmüştür. Asit uygulanmasından en az etkilenen yüzeylerin Vİtrebond simana ait olduğu ve asit uygulanmamış yüzeylerin daha retantif olduğu bulunmuştur. Çalışmamızda elde ettiğimiz SEM bulgularına göre cam iyonomer siman yüzeylerine, kompozit resin restorasyonlardan önce asit uygulanmasına mutlaka gerek olmadığı ortaya konmuştur.
