XX. yüzyıl insanoğlunun gerçekleştirdiği yeni bir devrimi yaşamıştır. Teknolojide ortaya çıkan ve bu yüzyıla kadar görülmemiş hızlı ve kapsamlı değişme ve gelişmeler, çağımızı bir teknoloji çağı yapmıştır.
XX. yüzyılın en önemli olayı, geleceğin bilgi toplumunun ilk aşamalarının gerçekleştirilmiş olmasıdır. Bilgi toplumunun kurulmasında en önemli etken telekomünikasyon ve bilgi-işlem alanlarında yaşanan gelişmeler olmuştur. Bu gelişmeler sanayi ve hizmet sektörlerini olduğu kadar günlük hayatımızı da etkilemektedir.
