Problem solving is the center in mathematics and science curriculum, which would affect the whole curriculum. Thus, having none or lack of problem-solving skill might tend to major difficulties. Problem solving is not conclusion but it is a process. The success in this process is dependent on students ' interest, problem solving skill, motivation, and self confidence. In addition, knowing how to start and carry on the procedure in the problem is also important. Students' conceptual understanding is more important than memorization and rote learning in mathematics and science problems. Therefore, these skills play an important role on acquisition of other skills. In this study, the importance of problem solving has been emphasized and its purpose, teaching, steps and assessment have been explained. Also, examples have been provided in terms of how problem-solving steps on mathematics and science problems would be applied.

Problem çözme, matematik ve fen müfredatının odak noktasıdır ve dolayısıyla bütün müfredatı etkilemektedir. Bu nedenle, problem çözme becerisinin kazanılamaması veya eksik kazanımı ciddi sıkıntılar doğurabilir. Problem çözme, bir sonuç değildir aksine bir süreçtir. Bu yüzden, problem çözmede başarı, öğrencilerin ilgi, beceri, motivasyon ve kendilerine olan güvenlerine bağlıdır. Bunun yanında, öğrencilerin problem çözme süreciyle ilgili adımları bilmeleri ve bunları problem çözümlerinde uygulayabilmeleri de önemlidir. Matematik ve fen problemlerinde, öğrencilerin bilgiyi ezberleme yerine kavrayarak öğrenmeleri çok önemlidir. Bu nedenle, bu becerinin kazanılması diğer becerilerin kazanılmasında da anahtar role sahiptir. Bu çalışmada, fen ve matematik eğitiminde problem çözme etkinliğinin önemi üzerinde durulmuş, amacı, öğretimi, adımları ve değerlendirilmesine yönelik açıklamalara, ayrıca problem çözme adımlarının fen ve matematik problemlerinde nasıl uygulanabileceğine yönelik örnek problem çözme etkinliklerine yer verilmiştir.
