Abstract (2. Language):
Due to the increasing use of navigation systems, linguistic strategies used for giving directions in different cultures should be identified. For this purpose 232 people were asked to give directions in different natural contexts. The data were analyzed for environmental features, delimiters, comments, offers and target direction. In addition, the interaction between sentence types (stative vs. action verb) and the strategies used was als o investigated. Based on the data, 'environment or object based frame of reference' was found to be the most commonly used strategy in Turkish. It was also found that there is a relationship between sentence type (stative vs. action verb) and strategies used. As an indepentent variable, gender did not have a significant effect on strategies and sentence types. It is hoped that the results of this study may contribute to language and strategy selection for navigation systems in Turkey and also to materials development for teaching Turkish.
